Bangalore@Rock Music Concerts

Bangalore rocks!

From the Stones to Deep Purple and now Aerosmith Bangalore's the top destination for rock music.

AEROSMITH ON 2nd June 2007!!!!!!

Rock rules.

At least in Bangalore it does. How else do you explain the steady stream of biggie rock acts coming to the city over the last few years? Rock fans can't wait for Aerosmith to fly here from the US on June 2. Why is Bangalore so sold on classic rock acts? While some say the rockers are a parade of has-beens, concert ticket sales say otherwise. The last concert by cult metal band Iron Maiden saw a jam-packed arena of 30,000 screaming fans. "There's a strong rock college community here," says VJ Nikhil Chinapa, who's always believed that the music-loving Bangalorean is the most discerning fan, "This has fostered a really strong rock band culture." People have grown up listening to many of the visiting bands, he points out: "Now they can afford their tickets." Brand consultant and rock fan Anoopa Anand, who has sung a spirited version of Falling In Love Is So Hard on The Knees for a song competition, believes Bangalore is rock's new capital. "Almost all international rock acts pick Bangalore over Kolkata, Delhi and even Mumbai. I'd like to think there's a romantic reason for this. But it can't be merely coincidental that this city has just as recently acquired buying power akin to none," she says.

ROLLING STONES

The last couple of years have seen 8-10 top acts coming to the country, half of them to Bangalore — and it's all about Bangalore going global, says Keertan Adhyantha, VP and GM of an international music and lifestyle channel. "Earlier, India was regarded as an exotic destination for these rock stars; now they come to get in touch with their audiences. And audience numbers are as high here as anywhere in the world," he says. T Venkat Vardhan, MD of the event management company handling Aerosmith, calls the rock acts "timeless and classic. Though they are older, the Stones and Aerosmith perform like they did 30 years ago." And that's why there's a constant demand for their music. "Even when we do our quarterly research, rock comes up number one in Bangalore. I'm anticipating an audience of about 25,000, judging by enquiries and website hits." While Mumbai receives rock as well, Venkat says there's more energy and participation from Bangalore's audiences. Geographically, too, Bangalore is easily accessible. "Aerosmith is only coming to Bangalore — straight from the US. These groups talk to each other, so they know exactly what to expect here." Nikhil Chinapa, who admits to being a "huge Aerosmith fan," is keeping his fingers crossed they will play Walk This Way and Dude (Looks Like A Lady) and says he won't miss being there on June 2. "I had Aerosmith logos all over my T-shirts and bags growing up. I'm a huge Steven Tyler fan and I won't miss it for the world," he say.
